The Ministry of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects the new attack from the outgoing President of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, in his effort to destroy Colombian-Venezuelan relations, a goal which he has undertaken with sickly obsession in the last years.
After eight years of diplomatic failure and militarism as the only regional policy, President Uribe leaves a country in war, a government isolated in Latin America and distanced from its neighbors. We hope that the new government gives high priority to a proposal of a peace plan for Colombia, which would allow South America to accompany the implementation of a solution that addresses the root causes of the armed conflict affecting our brother country.
The pathetic media show on Thursday, July 15 was a desperate attempt to damage a possible normalization of bilateral relations, in which the intrigue of the Embassy of the United States to Bogotá, whose ambassador was consulted by the Minister of Defense before offering his press conference, has not been absent.
Every time that the government of Colombia has provided information about the alleged presence of irregular Colombian groups in Venezuelan territory, the government of Venezuela has carried out the necessary verifications and has systematically confirmed the falseness of such information. In various opportunities, the coordinates have been in places located in Colombia’s own territory.
Notwithstanding, the government of Álvaro Uribe has irresponsibly and repeatedly accused the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela of providing support to the Colombian guerrillas. We just have to recall the complaints of alleged deliveries of rifles and rocket launchers to the Colombia guerrilla by the Bolivarian National Armed Force to prove that Venezuela has belied with solid evidence the speculations of the government led by Uribe.
The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates, as it has always has along with other neighboring countries, that it will strongly act with the full weight of the law and law enforcement agencies if there is a possibility of irregular groups on the vast border with Colombia.
The path of lies, attacks and disrespect for Venezuela will always block the normalization of relations between the governments of our countries. If this situation continues, the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela will assess the implementation of very strong political and diplomatic measures.
The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, on behalf of the Venezuelan people, reiterates its fraternity with the Colombian people, as it regrets that high-ranking Colombian authorities are taking part in a campaign full of lies and division.
