Presidents Ch?vez and Santos Ratify Full Reinstatement of Relations

Statement

On Monday, February 6, 2012, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, spoke by telephone with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, as they often do, to review progress on relations between their countries.

President Santos expressed his gratitude to Venezuela for detaining Hector German Buitriago Parada and Orlando Buitrago, two paramilitaries sought by Colombia for their role in thousands of murders in the country’s eastern plains.

Additionally, the presidents ratified the importance of the next meeting of their bilateral Safety Commission, to be held this Friday, February 10, in Cúcuta and San Cristobal, Colombia.

The presidents congratulated one other for successfully reinstating relations in all areas, highlighting bilateral trade in particular, which grew to reach $2 billion by the close of 2010. They also reaffirmed their will to continue moving forward with cooperation on other issues such as economic development and investments and infrastructure, including the oil pipeline to the Pacific Ocean and the navigation of the Orinoco and Meta Rivers.

Finally, both presidents reiterated their willingness to hold another trimestral meeting, and instructed their foreign affairs ministers to determine a date and location for the meeting.
